Hi my Sweet Family, I have started another blog. The other day when we were at the store, Kim and I bought a book of prompts to help us journal. Mom had a great idea for us to have a blog to answer the prompts in the book. I will post the prompts and then we can all answer them in the comments. Let's see how it goes, happy writing :)
Prompt: What is your favorite work of art? What do you love about it?
My favorite piece of art would be Michelangelo's sculpture of David. It is not that I like giant naked dudes made out of stone, but it is the philosophy of the artists of that time. They believed that they were uncovering art that was already hiding in the stone. I just think that is a nice way of thinking about things. I like the idea of uncovering beauty that is hidden beneath. Aren't we all just God's beautiful creations trapped in the stone of a fallen world. Our relationship with God helps to chip the stone away and reveal the beauty of God's love the the world around us.
ReplyDeleteTrich this will not take my submissions, is there a trick to it.
ReplyDeleteThis forum has given me grief! Perhaps third time is a charm…my favorite piece of art (for the moment) is my small sculpture of a depiction of The Thinker by Rodin. You know the one where the guy is sitting there just contemplating who knows what…
ReplyDeleteWell, I have a small sculpture of a chimpanzee in that position holding a human skull in its hand. The reason I love this is that I can relate to it. There are so many times that I wonder what in the world we ‘humans’ are doing! I can only speculate about what other so called “lower order species” think about us. No other species plans the purposeful destruction of other members of its clan or targets specific species for destruction; only ‘higher order’ humans! Looking at my chimpanzee keeps me aware of my failings!
So glad you got it to work, we will have to tell Eve and Kim about it in the morning when we walk. I included them on my email, but they have not posted yet. Now we are ahead and they have homework, hehe
DeleteHello my beloved family! Well, I have known about this for a while, but find it very hard to enter long text from my phone. Each time I think about writing - I am not near my computer. Today, I am near my computer :-)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite piece of art is unknown - by an unknown artist. To say unknown is a little misleading...he is known. Known to me, known to his family, known to the artists who present work in Houston. I should have said - he is not famous.
Hung Pham has produced some amazing pieces of art. Graphics, paintings, charcoals, acrylics, sculptures, and carvings. I have a portfolio of his...somewhere. When he was in high school, Hung participated in the Houston Livestock and Rodeo art contest and won for a sculpture titled, "Immigration". It's a bust of a young person and it's extremely graphic. It's almost hard to look at. The bust is hairless, the eyes are squeezed, tightly shut, the mouth is sewn closed, and the ears are mangled beyond recognition. The overall color of the bust is a dirty, mottled flesh tone, but it looks like old skin - worn skin - tired skin. This piece of art is disturbing, yet captivating. It compels you to look - needs you to see - begs you to understand.
Initially, I thought this sculpture was a representation of Hung's homeland - Viet Nam. I thought perhaps he was portraying the atrocities of the Viet Nam war, and the unrest that still happens there. No - Hung told me the story of his bust....
'When I came to America, I didn't speak English. It was like living on a different planet. The food was so different, the people talked too fast, and I felt like I would not make it another day. People would talk and I couldn't understand them. It was like hearing through mangled ears. Sounds came in, but nothing made sense. I looked around, and nothing seemed familiar. A lot of the time, I just shut my eyes...too much concrete, not enough trees - or rain. When I talked, if I talked, no one understood me. Even after I learned English, I didn't really know how to use it, so I just stayed quiet'.
I tried to buy this bust from Hung, but he wouldn't sell it to me. I understand. I can buy some of his other work. It's amazing. He's currently and architecture student at U of H, and he's going to change the world one day...brilliant young man. I need to buy a piece before he's too famous.
